A Deep Dive into Appliance Longevity: Are They Built to Last?

The Marvel of Dishwashers
The invention of the dishwasher has truly transformed kitchen life, and if yours is functioning well, consider yourself fortunate. Unfortunately, ours gave up on us about a month ago in quite an unexpected manner. I discovered its demise while unloading dish after dish, along with silverware that was still coated in stubborn, dried food, necessitating a lengthy soak and a vigorous scrub with a Brillo pad—how frustrating!
At first, I thought it was still operational. I had grown accustomed to the familiar sounds of it churning and groaning, and I heard water sloshing as it supposedly completed its rinse cycle. It turns out, that was merely an old-fashioned deception!
This dishwasher is only 6.5 years old, while my previous one lasted over 10 years without any issues before it finally quit. That machine exhibited no signs of decline, unlike this one, which seemed to be on a slow path to failure. My last unit was a Whirlpool, and this one is a GE, so perhaps there's a difference in quality. However, I'm beginning to suspect that manufacturers are intentionally shortening the lifespan of their products—this feels like a prime example of corporate greed surfacing.
Tell me I’m mistaken…
Our previous refrigerator lasted 11 years, yet our current model, now 6 years old, occasionally alters its temperature by itself. Is this a sign of impending failure? The last oven we owned functioned for around 16 years before it outright refused to turn on. After replacing it a decade ago, we’ve faced issues for the last three years where it sometimes fails to reach the desired temperature, requiring us to keep a cheap oven thermometer inside permanently.
Our last television served us well for about 10 years, but we replaced it with one that malfunctioned right on schedule at 7 years. The current one is 4 years old and, so far, is holding up well—fingers crossed!
Four years ago, we purchased a new washing machine after my dependable Maytag finally gave out after 18 years! I actually felt emotional when they took it away. We replaced it with a Maytag ‘Bravos’ that lacks an agitator but sounds like a distressed tugboat trying to change direction. Its pitiful noises compel us to keep the laundry room door shut while it runs, as we refuse to feel sympathy for an appliance.
Three years ago, our hallway toilet failed to flush after 18 years of service, prompting us to replace it. Now, the new one occasionally refuses to flush as well, despite being one of the pricier models! Even our son-in-law, a skilled handyman, is stumped by its issues, and it’s just one of many he has installed as a remodeler.
While I typically avoid discussing mundane daily events as they can be tedious, I believe there’s a significant issue at play here.
What is happening with the lifespan of appliances? Can’t we construct them to endure? I’m convinced we have the capability, so if the root cause isn't tied to corporate greed, what is it? With all the advancements in technology and lessons learned since the past, why aren’t we producing cars and appliances designed for longevity? We certainly pay a premium for them!
I invite your insights on this matter.
