Embracing Your Journey: Stop Feeling Like a Parenting Failure

Chapter 1: Understanding the Weight of Motherhood
Do you often find yourself grappling with feelings of inadequacy as a mother? Do you ever wish for a chance to redo your parenting choices? You might even think your children would thrive better with someone else. Yet, as Albert Einstein famously stated, "Failure is success in progress." Confronting our fears and shortcomings can lead us to make meaningful changes in our lives.
Many mothers struggle with feelings of failure due to the societal pressures that dictate what it means to be a good mom. However, let me assure you, you are not failing. If you haven't thrown in the towel, you're still achieving!
But, you might say, "Billie, you don’t understand. Some days I feel overwhelmed and just want to stay in bed." Or perhaps, "I often feel overly sensitive and need to disconnect, even from my kids. What kind of mother does that make me?"

You could walk away from your responsibilities at any moment; no one would stop you. And to any fathers reading this, I apologize if that sounds harsh—just keeping it real here. But the truth is, mama, you haven’t given up! You’re still in the game.
My 15-year-old daughter, who has faced her own challenges, once told me she aspires to be just like me when she becomes a mother. I was taken aback. Surely, she deserves to aim higher than a mom who battles mental health issues daily—right? She is intelligent, kind, and has so much to offer.
But then she clarified, and it made me pause.
"Mama, I’m focused on my education and my future family. I admire the way you are with us now, despite everything. You started having kids at 17, never getting the chance to find yourself beyond motherhood. That must have been tough, which is why I’m taking my time. I want to be you someday, but first, I want to discover who I am."
You have taught me that.
As mothers, we will inevitably make mistakes, both big and small, in raising our children. Yet, this serves as proof that as we strive for improvement, we can also enhance our parenting skills. Mistakes are part of the journey. Acknowledge them, learn from them, and move forward.
You are a Success in Progress!
