Exploring Alternatives: Is the Amazon Halo View Right for You?

Written on

Chapter 1: The Shift from Apple Watch

The Apple Watch has long been hailed as one of the premier smartwatches available. However, my familiarity with other brands, particularly those using Android Wear, has diminished over time. The Apple Watch stands out, especially for iPhone users, thanks to its seamless integration within the Apple ecosystem.

As I discussed in my previous article, "The Beauty of Single-Use Devices," there are times when the features of the Apple Watch feel excessive. Occasionally, I prefer to wear a simpler timepiece, and my go-to has been the Casio F-84W, along with a Seiko 5 and a Fossil watch gifted by my wife long before we tied the knot.

Adjusting to life without an Apple Watch after years of use has its challenges. I often instinctively raise my wrist to check notifications, glance at my Carrot Weather complication, or manage podcast playback. The convenience of controlling my phone through my wrist adds significant value to having a smartwatch.

While my traditional watches still display the time, date, and day of the week—functions I frequently utilize—the Apple Watch also allowed me to unlock my MacBook and iMac Pro effortlessly. This feature has been invaluable, especially since these devices predate Touch ID.

To maintain that level of convenience without donning an Apple Watch, I've been experimenting with an app called Near Lock. This application quickly unlocks my MacBook upon opening it from sleep, often feeling swifter than my Apple Watch.

In the video titled "I Hate That I Love the Apple Watch Ultra," the creator shares their mixed feelings about the Apple Watch Ultra, detailing both the love and frustration that comes with using this device.

Chapter 2: Exploring the Amazon Halo View

The Amazon Halo View has emerged as a potential alternative for those seeking fitness tracking without the complexities of a smartwatch. Unlike its predecessor, the Halo Band, which lacked a display, the Halo View features a streamlined design with a rectangular screen, focusing primarily on activity tracking.

With a vibrant AMOLED display, the colors and text are striking, enhancing usability. While the pixel density isn't stellar, it suffices for quick checks on time and notifications.

The Halo app complements the device well, utilizing a points system similar to the Apple Watch's Move ring. Users are encouraged to achieve 150 points weekly for optimal heart health, as recommended by the American Heart Association. This system effectively tracks various activities, from walking to running, and even identifies exercises independently.

In the video "How the Apple Watch Helped Me Lose 20 lbs...," the user discusses how the Apple Watch played a pivotal role in their fitness journey, highlighting its benefits and features that motivate users to stay active.

The Halo View also surprises with text message notifications from my iPhone, displaying messages directly on its screen. Additionally, it includes practical tools like an alarm, timer, and stopwatch.

As for sleep tracking, my experience has been limited, but initial data from the Halo View seems to hold up against traditional sleep trackers. For instance, I received a sleep score of 83 after one night, revealing valuable insights into my sleep patterns.

One standout feature of the Halo View is its exceptional battery life. Despite using it overnight, I found it retained approximately 80% charge by morning—a far cry from the nightly charging routine of my Apple Watch.

While I initially hesitated at the lack of compatibility with the Apple Health app, I've realized that I seldom analyze historical health data, making this concern less significant. Additionally, purchasing a Halo includes a membership that grants access to various features, although the non-member options are sufficient for my needs.

In conclusion, the Halo View might be the ideal substitute for the activity tracking capabilities I previously relied on from my Apple Watch. I plan to test it for a few more weeks before making a final decision. However, it's evident that I'm leaning towards transitioning from the Apple Watch to a more traditional timepiece paired with the Halo View's features. If you're interested, the Halo View is currently available for just $44 during the early Prime Day deals.
