Exploring Life's Purpose: Why Are We Here?

Written on

Chapter 1: The Quest for Meaning

Have you ever pondered your existence? Are we here due to a divine intention, or did everything simply emerge from nothingness?

Contemplating Existence

Imagine you're living your everyday life when, out of the blue, someone abducts you, covering your head with a bag. Once they remove it, you find yourself on a train headed to an unknown destination. After being offered food and drink, what do you think your immediate reaction would be? The first question on your mind would likely be, “Why am I here?”

You wouldn’t simply dismiss your situation by saying, “Oh, look, food!” unless you were entirely oblivious. If someone were to ask whether you knew your destination, a foolish response might be, “It doesn’t matter.” However, what if they asked when you would arrive? A thoughtful person would realize that while everyone seems to be enjoying themselves, such indifference to one's journey is unwise. Thus, this train analogy serves as a metaphor for life itself.

This perspective reflects the mindset prevalent in modern society, particularly in the West, where it’s often suggested we refrain from grappling with these crucial questions. The inquiries that are central to our existence are frequently ignored. Isn’t it concerning that those who suppress these questions may lack critical thinking? We are all passengers on the train of life, yet many of us remain oblivious to our destination.

Materialism has infiltrated our lives like a widespread disease. Discussions about increasing bank balances dominate platforms like Medium, promoting a "hustle culture" focused on financial gain. While I acknowledge the importance of financial stability and the freedom it can bring, I also recognize the diminishing presence of spirituality and profound introspection. We risk falling into nihilism, which I believe is a significant factor contributing to the escalating rates of mental health issues and suicides, as individuals lose faith in themselves and humanity.

There will always be skeptics who argue, “Can you see God? No? Then I don’t believe.” But consider this: can you see air? Such a viewpoint is fundamentally materialistic—simplistic and shallow. Take a moment to observe the trees and animals around you. Do you genuinely believe there is no creator, no ultimate designer behind this magnificent world? An iPhone is crafted by design; why should we believe that we and our universe are any different?

The inability to comprehend God or the notion of intelligent design does not negate their existence. In fact, it highlights our own limitations. Perhaps we lack the capacity to fully grasp these complexities. We must acknowledge that not everything can be measured or quantified. In our technology-driven age, it is crucial to recognize these boundaries. Some individuals, particularly those holding atheistic beliefs, assume humanity is the pinnacle of existence. To them, I offer a warning: a profound realization awaits just around the corner.

Chapter 2: The Complexity of Existence

As we navigate life, it's essential to confront these profound questions and seek a deeper understanding of our purpose.
