Chapter 1: Embracing Self-Care
Taking care of oneself requires ongoing effort and attention. Recharging my social, emotional, and mental energies necessitates prioritizing time for myself. I've come to understand that I am at a stage in life where I have more leisure time than I might ever have again, yet I often find myself wasting it away.
During a conversation with my dad about developing better habits, he pointed out how challenging it can be to maintain positive routines while it’s all too easy to let them slip away. Just think about all those New Year’s resolutions that are quickly abandoned.
I find myself questioning whether it’s a lack of discipline, motivation, or perhaps a combination of both. However, I’ve realized the importance of being gentle and forgiving with myself. Skipping a shower on occasion doesn’t make me a bad person. Neglecting my skincare routine doesn’t mean I don’t value my appearance. Failing to engage in activities that benefit me doesn’t define my character.
I’ve carried a lot of shame in my thoughts, with negative labels like “lazy” or “dirty” echoing in my mind. To combat this, I’ve made a conscious effort to engage my senses more frequently. I aim to truly observe my surroundings and be present in each moment. For instance, I took a moment to admire a stunning red flower during a visit to the botanical garden, capturing its beauty with a photo to cherish.
Nature often serves as a source of inspiration, and I intend to seek it out more regularly, especially when I encounter creative blocks. Perhaps, in doing so, I will learn to be kinder to myself during challenging times.
