Harnessing AI for Website Growth: Insights and Strategies

Chapter 1: My Journey with AI Content Creation
Since the launch of my website in 2021, my approach and purpose have evolved significantly. Initially, I embarked on this journey without a clear direction, motivated by the success I observed among my clients. However, my understanding of how to monetize a site was quite limited.
As time progressed, I transitioned from a full-time SEO specialist to an entrepreneur. While I won't claim that entrepreneurship is inherently better or easier, it certainly comes with its unique challenges. My work hours have increased, yet I find joy in the projects I pursue and cherish the freedom that comes with it.
I've authored several ebooks and successfully sold over 200 copies of my guide titled, "How to Write Blog Posts That Rank on Google." Additionally, I have monetized my email list, now boasting a newsletter with 1,700 subscribers—you can join here.
Through diligent effort, my website has grown from zero to over 6,000 organic visitors while I managed other projects. A common inquiry from my readers and subscribers revolves around my use of AI for enhancing productivity and website growth. The concise answer is yes; I do utilize AI for content generation.
However, as an SEO expert, I am also aware of the potential downsides associated with AI-generated content. I have conducted several experiments by publishing AI-generated articles on my site. One of my clients, a B2B agency, has also actively adopted this approach.
In this article, I will share insights gained from monitoring the effects of AI-generated content on SEO over time. If you're considering using AI tools to create content for your website, this article will provide valuable insights into the potential outcomes and risks.
Chapter 2: The Impact of AI on SEO Rankings
When ChatGPT gained popularity, I was curious about its potential to enhance search rankings. Essentially, AI tools like ChatGPT have emerged as cost-effective alternatives to traditional content writers. In the past, hiring a writer was essential to create competitive content, but now, AI can accomplish this in mere minutes.
Moreover, AI-generated content can indeed achieve high rankings! My experiments have shown positive outcomes regarding this. For instance, a software review I created using Bard, Google's AI chatbot, currently occupies the 6th position in organic search results, as reported by Ahrefs. While I haven't yet earned affiliate commissions from this article, I've seen multiple sign-ups from my links, indicating that users find my review useful.
Section 2.1: Limitations of AI-Generated Content
Despite some successes, I've observed that the performance of AI-generated articles can often be subpar. Generally, to rank within the top 10, one should target low-competition keywords. By "low-competition," I refer to keywords with a difficulty rating below 30 (using Semrush or Ahrefs) and the presence of websites with low domain authority in the top results (DR < 30).

Section 2.2: The Lack of Personal Touch
After reviewing numerous AI-generated articles, it's clear to me when content is produced by AI. Key characteristics that set it apart from human writing include:
- Lack of distinct personality
- Frequent use of passive voice
- Abundance of general statements
- Absence of personal anecdotes
- Missing exclusive insights or expertise
These traits are likely to be recognized by search engine bots, such as Google's crawler. Moreover, readers can quickly discern when their time has been wasted on shallow content. If your audience finds your content unengaging, they may leave, prompting Google to lower your page's ranking due to poor user engagement. This concern is why I consistently update my website content to maintain its ranking.
Section 2.3: The Shortcomings of Sole Reliance on AI
If you’re contemplating whether it's wise to depend solely on AI for content creation, my answer is a resounding no! I haven’t encountered successful examples of websites that have consistently grown by relying on AI-generated material.
Furthermore, have you heard about Google's helpful content updates? Google has implemented two updates specifically aimed at combating poorly written content that aims to manipulate rankings.
For instance, I created an article titled "SEO for Startups" using an AI tool and did not update it for the purposes of this experiment. In contrast, human-written articles on my site have maintained their rankings for years.
Section 2.4: Best Practices for Using AI
If you choose to publish AI-generated content, it’s essential to adhere to certain strategies to align your website with Google's standards:
- Stay within your niche to help Google associate your site with specific topics.
- Share your expertise in your content.
- Provide an author bio that outlines your qualifications and experience.
- Align your website with E-E-A-T (Expertise, Experience, Authority, Trust).
I’ve also published an article detailing how I responsibly use AI tools for website growth.
Conclusion
Regardless of personal opinions about AI, its presence is here to stay. The most effective approach is to learn how to utilize it to enhance our lives and work.
Despite my reservations about AI-generated content, I recognize that the online space will soon be saturated with it. Many content creators seem more focused on engagement metrics than on delivering value, making it increasingly difficult to find useful information.
I firmly believe that by concentrating on your niche and providing valuable content, you can successfully grow your website's organic search rankings, even while utilizing AI-generated materials. My confidence stems from my own positive experiences over the years.
AI can be a valuable ally if you know how to wield it effectively. I hope this article has provided insights on making the most of AI in your content strategy.
