As Tony Robbins famously states, “Progress Equals Happiness.” This statement resonates with me deeply, especially as I navigate through life and seek continuous improvement. My journey involves enhancing our finances, dietary choices, exercise habits, and sleep patterns. This relentless pursuit of betterment can sometimes be draining.

While I take pride in the advancements we've made as a family over the past few years, I recognize that there will always be more to strive for. Instead of focusing solely on one area—be it work, health, or family—I have adopted a holistic approach, aiming for balance across all facets of our lives.

The book that has significantly influenced my perspective is "Atomic Habits" by James Clear. However, I don't believe that a single book can revolutionize someone’s life, at least not mine. I don't rush to implement every suggestion from a book immediately. I prefer to reflect on the concepts, allowing them to settle in my mind. Some ideas may fade away, while others simmer and eventually integrate into my life.

Chapter 2: Transforming Eating Habits

A significant area I wanted to focus on was our eating habits. My wife and I decided to cut down on sugar and transition to a low-carb lifestyle. This isn't just a temporary fix but a fundamental shift in how we live.

Initially, it was a challenge to resist the temptations of our favorite treats, and we stumbled a few times along the way. However, the turning point came when we decluttered our pantry and refrigerator. Now, you won't find rice, pasta, cookies, or chips in our home. Instead, our fridge is stocked with eggs, fish, meat, vegetables, and fruits.

This strategic change in our environment has made it easier to adhere to our new dietary choices without constant effort. James Clear emphasizes in his book that our surroundings play a crucial role in shaping our habits—both good and bad. To establish a new habit, first, assess how you can modify your environment to facilitate that change.

Chapter 3: Incorporating New Habits

Adding two new habits to my daily routine—reading and meditating—has proven to be effortless. Reading is a fantastic way to gain knowledge daily. Although no single book will dramatically alter my life, each one contributes ideas that eventually take root in my mind.

However, I found myself struggling to establish a consistent reading routine, as a book had been gathering dust on my bedside table for months. As for meditation, it serves as a necessary escape from external distractions. While I recognize its benefits, I often only turn to it in times of stress, making it difficult to form a daily habit.

The breakthrough for both habits was simple:

  1. Keep it manageable.
  2. Link these small tasks to an existing routine.

Before bedtime, I now read ten pages. This is straightforward; going to bed is already a part of my routine. By anchoring this new habit to an established one, I ensure that it becomes a regular part of my life. If I'm too tired, I can always reduce it to five pages. The key isn't the number of pages but the consistency of reading daily. This practice also helps me disconnect from my phone before sleep, which is an added benefit.

In the mornings, I meditate for ten minutes before turning on my laptop. My routine used to consist of waking up, exercising, taking the kids to school, walking the dog, having breakfast, showering, and then starting work. Now, I’ve incorporated a brief meditation session using the Headspace app right before I start my workday.

Just like with reading, anchoring meditation to an established routine has made it easier to integrate. It doesn’t need to be rigid; if I'm short on time, I can adjust the duration. The key is to maintain consistency—five minutes or even one minute is better than skipping it entirely.

Chapter 4: Key Principles for Success

The main lessons I've gleaned from "Atomic Habits" revolve around the importance of environment, manageable tasks, and anchoring. These principles have significantly helped me combat procrastination and refine my daily routine.
