Metrosexuals: Redefining Masculinity and Aesthetics in Modern Life

The Evolution of the Modern Man
The days of the indifferent man, unconcerned with his appearance, are now a thing of the past.
“The Modern Man” is characterized by a keen sense of style, investing in skincare products to maintain a radiant complexion, and showing a penchant for luxury items that rivals that of women. In fact, this new breed of man may even take greater care of their appearance than many women today.
I am referring to the everyday individual who leads a regular life—be it in an office environment, as a professional coach, or as an entrepreneur—not the high-fashion models or style aficionados. This growing demographic is increasingly attentive to their looks.
These men are not just searching for trendy accessories; they are also keen on makeup products. From concealers to eyeliners, mascaras to foundations, their interest knows no bounds. While blush may be an exception, many of these men are well-versed in various makeup shades and can even demonstrate their use. Typically, they dedicate about 30 to 45 minutes each day to their skincare routines.
Innovative Brands Catering to the New Male Demographic
Luxury brands have recognized this shift and have expanded their product lines to cater to the needs of the modern man. Some brands have even ventured into gender-neutral products, eliminating the traditional distinction between male and female items.
A notable example is the Japanese brand Fiveism x Three, launched in 2018, which specializes in products tailored for men, including foundation sticks, concealers, and nail polishes. According to the brand's director, their Face Camo Kit is designed in a mobile phone shape, making it easier for men to handle the concealer bar holder.
Public Perception and the Role of Makeup in Confidence
In 2017, when it was revealed that French President Emmanuel Macron spent €26,000 (£22,000) on makeup within his first three months in office, it raised eyebrows. Similarly, there were whispers about Donald Trump using Bronx Color concealer.
What drives these men to invest time and effort into skincare and makeup? Beauty influencer Jake Jamie provides insight, stating, "Makeup allows me to walk down the street with my head held high, feeling like the best version of myself."
Makeup fosters confidence, happiness, and a sense of self-fulfillment. Public sentiment supports the notion that men should have the freedom to use makeup for enhancing their appearance without compromising their masculinity. Many believe that makeup can also contribute to a more professional look.
Studies indicate that most women are generally accepting of their partners using light makeup, such as concealer or foundation, provided it remains subtle. With female support, more modern men are likely to emerge, encouraged to explore these products.
My hairstylist is male, and I prefer male stylists over female ones because I feel they have an artistic flair and a commitment to perfection. My husband even assists me with shaping my eyebrows, showcasing that men can possess skills in grooming without prior experience.
In no time at all, the traditionally female-dominated cosmetic and luxury markets may be significantly influenced by the modern man.
