Chapter 1 Values for a Fulfilling Life
In the concluding section of this series, I want to highlight the values that I believe are essential for living a fulfilling life. Our values significantly influence our perceptions of existence, determining whether our lives feel vibrant or dreary. As I advance in years, I often reflect on my desired way of living, which leads me to contemplate the values I hope to instill in my children. I believe these four core principles encapsulate the essence of a fulfilling life.
Section 1.1 Kindness
I consider kindness to be perhaps the most crucial principle. While I don’t claim to be perfect, I strive to exhibit genuine kindness, especially during challenging times. Life is about making a conscious effort to act positively. Genuine kindness, devoid of hidden agendas or bias, is what I advocate.
It appears that humans are inherently inclined to be kind and assist those who are less fortunate. This is reflected in the profound sense of satisfaction we derive from helping others, making it paradoxically one of the most self-serving actions. Any act of kindness, no matter how minor, is infectious and aids in fostering a more compassionate world. Ultimately, in the grand scheme of things, our existence may be fleeting, and we may not leave a lasting mark. Thus, we should endeavor to make our world a kinder place while we can. Strive to develop into a more compassionate individual.
Subsection 1.1.1 The Ripple Effect of Kindness
Section 1.2 Humility
Avoid the temptation to present yourself as someone you’re not, to demean others, or to boast about your achievements. There will always be individuals who surpass you in various domains—whether in knowledge, strength, intelligence, or talent. Concentrate on what lies within your control: your mindset and your relentless pursuit of self-improvement.
You’ll often notice that those who possess true knowledge, strength, or wisdom tend to exhibit the highest levels of humility. They recognize the vast expanse of what they have yet to learn and value the obstacles they've overcome to attain their current status. Therefore, maintain a humble attitude as you embark on your lifelong learning journey.
Chapter 2 Courage and Risk-Taking
Courage, in my view, encompasses the willingness to take risks—whether it’s starting anew, exploring new ventures, or seizing opportunities. Don’t shy away from potential embarrassment or the discomfort of being a novice; everyone has to begin somewhere, and in the end, few will remember your awkward moments. I’ve discovered that even the smallest acts of bravery have led to remarkable experiences—like learning to ski, which ignited my passion for the mountains, or volunteering for a fashion show that created unforgettable memories and friendships.
So, say yes more frequently, even if it feels out of your comfort zone. Embrace every opportunity to engage with life; we have a limited amount of time, and you never know where that next 'yes' may take you.
Section 2.1 The Power of Saying Yes
Discipline is the cornerstone of achieving any goal in life. Even in moments of low motivation, it’s essential to push forward towards your aspirations. It’s about fostering the right mindset—viewing tasks not as obligations, but as opportunities. Nowadays, I find excitement in tackling work challenges, hitting the gym, attending martial arts classes, preparing dinner, writing on Medium, and coding for my side projects, all with the same enthusiasm I reserve for a good night's sleep or the weekend.
Establishing a routine becomes a rewarding journey in itself, and over time, you’ll find yourself embracing it. By practicing discipline and creating a solid routine, you prioritize personal growth and fulfillment.
This article draws inspiration not only from my reflections but also from a recent book I finished reading—Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. One quote from the book that resonated with me is:
Giving is living.
