# Transforming Your Mindset: A Path to Success Through Reflection

Chapter 1: A New Perspective on Success
Are you often comparing yourself to your past or your aspirations? It's time to adopt a mindset that focuses on progress.
Changing your viewpoint can reshape your future. Throughout my twenties, I felt adrift, bouncing from one social event to another, struggling to maintain a job, and sometimes finding it hard to get out of bed. I understand the weight of feeling like a failure.
Success isn't just a destination; it's a skill that needs to be cultivated. This skill can enhance various aspects of your life, including your relationships, career, finances, and health. The crucial question is: do you know how to assess your achievements in a mentally healthy way?
Many individuals fail to learn how to measure their success effectively, which can hinder future achievements. Constantly measuring ourselves against our ambitions can be detrimental. This includes comparing ourselves to our peers, heroes, and where we aspire to be. Instead, there is a more constructive approach to pursuing success that does not involve fixating on what remains unachieved.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to shifting your mindset:
Step 1: Recognize Patterns in Others' Successes
Every narrative of success is often embellished in our minds. To grasp the authentic journey of successful individuals, delve into their biographies. You’ll uncover insecurities, failures, and moments of despair that shape their stories.
You aren't as different from those you admire as it may seem; what varies is the journey. It can be disheartening to feel inadequate when you compare your journey to accomplished authors like Ryan Holiday or James Clear. Perhaps you have a colleague or mentor whose success makes you feel inferior. Indeed, in comparison to their achievements, you may feel behind.
However, remember that those you admire also faced failures and setbacks before reaching their current heights. Shift your focus away from measuring yourself against their successes, and stop chastising yourself for not being where you wish to be.
Step 2: Reflect on Your Progress
Do not underestimate the progress you've made over the years. Think of old photos from high school or college—do they make you cringe not just because of the fashion choices, but also due to where you were in life? Who were you dating? What were your aspirations?
While revisiting those moments may feel uncomfortable, they reflect your growth and maturity. They symbolize a phase completed—a step on your life's ladder. Embrace that progress.
It’s normal for life to feel chaotic at times. Regardless of how trivial your achievements may seem, whether overcoming significant challenges or simply growing out of your awkward teenage years, they all signify success. Celebrate those milestones!
Step 3: Shift to a Backward Measurement of Success
Adopting a backward approach to measure your success will allow you to thrive in the present. Letting go of unrealistic comparisons with those far ahead of you will enable you to appreciate your journey more fully. Instead of striving to meet future expectations, focus on reflecting on your past.
Begin this process by asking yourself:
- Where was I a year ago?
- What improvements have I achieved?
- Which successes am I proud of during this timeframe?
Documenting these reflections is essential for embracing the present—no more comparisons with an unrealized future. Instead, evaluate your progress against your past—whether it was a year ago, six months, or even last week.
That’s the essence of living in the gain.
