# Is the Productivity Culture Exclusively for the Elite?

Chapter 1: Understanding the Healthcare Routine Backlash

In managing a modest yet expanding Instagram account focused on healthcare, I've encountered significant feedback from a specific demographic. This group vehemently opposes the emphasis on healthcare routines, insisting that we are human beings, not machines.

The healthcare system often mandates certain tests as part of a routine, which this group strongly criticizes, arguing that unnecessary tests should be eliminated. Their perspective seems self-centered, overlooking the fact that these routines are designed to ensure uniform care for everyone. It's not uncommon for critical tests to be overlooked when they fall outside of established routines.

Upon sharing a blog post discussing the necessity of these routines in healthcare, the only feedback I received publicly was accusatory, suggesting that we were condescending toward the average person. Critics claimed our stance equated to healthcare malpractice.

This backlash prompted me to reevaluate the bubble I've constructed around myself. As someone who is passionate about systems and habits, I see their essential role in the functioning of any organization. To me, understanding their importance should be universal.

It took a considerable amount of time for me to process these reactions, and there are still aspects that leave me puzzled.

Looking at Myself in the Mirror

I find myself preoccupied with systems daily. They are my method for organizing work and ensuring consistent progress. Without them, I often feel stagnant. Does this make me overly controlling?

Reflecting on wasted time fills me with embarrassment, as I struggle to recall how I spent those hours. My desire for control and advancement may have contributed to my burnout in 2019, a situation I now recognize and am determined to avoid in the future.

While I still occasionally squander time, I view productivity as my sole means of discerning what will drive me forward. It’s not about sheer output; it's about concentration.

Let's face it: many of us struggle with discipline and focus, and we develop these traits through practice. But what motivates us to pursue this discipline?

Ultimately, we seek financial success, don’t we?

I’ve cultivated this mindset and insulated myself for years. Thus, when I shared that article, I was caught off guard. My perspective seemed logical within my bubble, but it felt alien to those who hadn't shared my experiences.

Everyone Has Their Take on Productivity

During my research for this article, I stumbled upon a forum filled with hackers discussing their grievances with productivity culture. One participant noted that even Isaac Newton engaged in various pursuits—attempting to predict the future through biblical texts, experimenting with alchemy, and chasing fantastical ideas.

Some in the discussion dismiss productivity as a trait of "losers," claiming that true wealth today comes solely from real estate investments. This divergence highlights how opinions on productivity are abundant, yet mastery of it remains elusive for many. Perhaps this fascination with productivity stems from its inherent challenges, as we all strive for superhuman capabilities.

The Polarizing Debate on Routines and Systems

Could this divide explain why we either embrace or reject productivity? The unnatural nature of productivity may compel some to pursue it relentlessly while others prefer a more human approach.

Might it be that lacking mastery over productivity leads to self-deprecation?

However, in larger organizations, routines become increasingly vital. High-quality service is unattainable without clear processes. Productivity and business experts often argue that an organization should prioritize systems over individuals. Does this imply that systems are exclusively for the elite?

What’s your stance? Are you a fervent advocate of productivity, or do you embrace your beautifully human side?
