Unlocking the Power of Habits for Exceptional Living

Written on

Chapter 1: The Significance of Habits

Recently, I participated in a mind-mapping workshop led by a renowned multiple New York Times bestselling author and high-performance coach. Engaging in programs offered by other coaches allows me to expand my own methods in coaching, lifestyle, and workflow from a broader perspective. These experiences also enable me to design more diverse and insightful programs for my clients.

However, I found myself disagreeing with a statement he made regarding habits. He suggested that attitudes hold more importance than habits, arguing that "attitudes are intentional, whereas habits are automatic." It appeared he believed we could manage our attitudes, but habits were beyond our control.

I strongly oppose this view. It’s essential to adopt a 'both/and' perspective rather than an 'either/or' one. Certainly, attitude plays a crucial role. Our intentions amplify our efforts in life. While it’s true that habits often operate on autopilot, they can yield positive outcomes when we cultivate a mindful attitude.

For many, habitual behaviors simply react to external circumstances. For instance, during hectic days, you might forget to eat, leading to feelings of guilt when you lash out at loved ones over minor issues.

Why does this occur?

When you skip meals, your blood sugar levels become unregulated, depriving your brain of essential fuel. This activates the amygdala, the primitive part of the brain, causing you to react with anger or frustration, akin to a famished animal in survival mode.

Many of us perceive 'healthy eating' as a superficial means to an end—weight loss or improved appearance. However, have you considered that cultivating healthy eating habits can enhance your relationships, prevent guilt-driven reactions, and support you in becoming the person you aspire to be?

The reality is, you can manage your habits by focusing on three key areas:

  1. Define Who You Are Becoming

It’s easy to let habits dictate your life when you fail to recognize how these behaviors shape your reality. If you desire a different life, you must present yourself differently. You need to embody the person who has crafted the life you envision, which entails forming intentional habits instead of existing on autopilot.

  2. Cultivate Self-Awareness

The downside of automatic habits is that we seldom pause to reflect on our actions. This can trap us in repetitive behaviors that hinder our purpose. By intentionally paying attention to your daily routines, you’ll begin to notice patterns that have long influenced your actions.

  3. Leverage Your Brain's Autopilot

If unwanted habits can arise without conscious effort, it stands to reason that desired habits can also become automatic. Our brains conserve energy and prefer paths of least resistance—habits that have been ingrained over time.

Consider brushing your teeth: it’s a healthy practice likely performed twice daily without a second thought. This is because it was ingrained in you early on, allowing your brain to develop 'muscle memory' around this behavior. Any habit can become as effortless and automatic as tooth brushing, requiring only initial awareness and intention to establish that muscle memory.

You are not ordinary; you are extraordinary! Your habits and mindset are significant. Your commitment to curating a purposeful life through intentional habits reflects your exceptional nature. And that’s why you’re here.
