Valuable Life Lessons from Hiking: Insights for Entrepreneurs

Chapter 1: The Journey Begins
This past weekend, I went to bed at 10 PM and woke up at 1 AM to embark on a hike up Mount Batur in Bali, Indonesia.
For those who know me, it’s evident that my reflections on sports and life are increasingly intertwined with entrepreneurship. It’s fascinating how much we can learn about life simply by paying attention to our experiences.
The first important lesson I grasped was that understanding your "WHY" can propel you forward significantly. My motivation for this hike stemmed from my adventurous spirit, which drives me to explore life to its fullest. So, when my alarm rang at 1 AM and my desire to stay cozy in bed was strong, my underlying purpose compelled me to rise.
After a two-hour car ride to the trailhead, I found myself uncomfortable but determined to make the best of the situation by maximizing any chance to rest. This mirrors the entrepreneurial journey—leveraging what you have, taking initiative, and crafting your path.
Once we began our ascent, I was filled with exhilaration, beauty, and wonder as I gazed at the clear sky—feelings reminiscent of starting a new business: freedom, excitement, and a bit of thrill. However, as the journey progressed, that initial joy morphed into fear and self-doubt. This taught me a crucial lesson: always monitor your thoughts and ensure they serve you well.
About twenty percent into the hike, fatigue set in, and looking up at the summit made the climb seem daunting. Yet, I maintained a positive mindset, listened to my body, and took it step by step. This approach applies equally in business; focusing on small actions rather than fixating on the end goal can lead to success.
While hiking, I encountered particularly challenging moments when my guide extended his hand to assist me. My instinctual reaction was to decline, driven by pride. However, I shifted my mindset to accept help, realizing it’s never solely about individual effort. Accepting support not only eases your challenges but also fosters camaraderie.
After a continuous effort, we finally reached the summit after 1.5 hours, and the view was breathtaking. Every ounce of struggle felt worthwhile, as the pains of the journey disappeared in the face of triumph.
However, a bittersweet feeling lingered because I was alone to savor that moment. This experience reminded me of another vital lesson: the significance of companionship during our journeys. Appreciate those who share your life, as they enhance the experience.
I reveled in my achievement, humbled by the beauty of nature. It solidified my purpose: to dedicate my efforts towards nurturing a thriving ecosystem. Lastly, one mountain conquered often leads to a desire for the next challenge. It’s a part of human nature. So, prepare for your next climb, but take time to reflect on your journey thus far. I hope to see you on the next mountain!
