Chapter 1: Insights from Egyptian Youth
Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to tutor several Egyptian students in ESL. Their insights into their homeland, particularly ancient Egypt, have always captivated me due to its rich mythology and archaeological significance.
One student, Seb, shared his experiences with me during our lessons. He works as an import-export supervisor and discussed the key exports of Egypt, including natural gas, gold, cotton textiles, medical products, citrus fruits, and dried onions. He mentioned that cement, steel, and ceramics have also recently joined this list.
When it comes to imports, Seb highlighted petroleum, vehicles, broadcasting technology, wheat, corn, and soybeans as the primary goods. He noted that Egypt's trade partners are diverse, with imports mainly coming from China, Russia, the U.S., Germany, and Saudi Arabia, while exports go to countries like Italy, Turkey, the UAE, and the U.S. He also pointed out the influence of Egypt’s Trade Unions and international trade agreements on their trade activities, which are deeply intertwined with political dynamics.
Seb elaborated on the challenges facing Egypt, particularly in agriculture. He explained that the country struggles to produce sufficient cereal grains, especially wheat and oilseeds, which are crucial as the diet heavily relies on government-subsidized bread. The situation worsened due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, given that Egypt sources around 85% of its wheat and 73% of its sunflower oil from these countries. The blockade at Ukrainian ports has exacerbated the domestic shortfall in these essential commodities.
Curious about the current political landscape, I inquired about Egypt’s role in the Middle East today. Seb remarked that Egypt's foreign policy has shifted from ambitious regional leadership to a more defensive stance, prioritizing security over political influence.
Seb also made an intriguing observation: his generation is more focused on personal growth and community connections than on political matters. Unlike previous generations that sought political upheaval for change, today’s youth are committed to fostering peace at both individual and communal levels.
He emphasized the importance of self-improvement over critiquing others, advocating for self-reflection and awareness. He believes that enhancing one's quality of life through personal development ultimately benefits the wider community.
