Becoming a Morning Person: Strategies for Early Rising
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding the Morning Struggle
Many people, like myself, find it challenging to embrace mornings. I often feel as if I have a different persona when I sleep—a persona that is reluctant to rise, eager to remain in the comfort of slumber. This "sleep personality" thrives on rest and shies away from early wake-ups. The moment I close my eyes, it seems as if all my enthusiasm vanishes, and I transform into someone who avoids the morning light.
The reality is, my dislike for early mornings persists regardless of my bedtime. On typical days off, I tend to wake around 7 AM, but on workdays, I rise at 5. Ideally, I aspire to awaken at 4 AM, and here’s my rationale:
On the rare occasions when I’ve managed to get up at 4 AM, I’ve experienced a profound sense of tranquility. The early morning hours bring an unmatched calmness, unlike the late-night hustle. Most people are still asleep at this hour, creating a serene environment devoid of distractions and obligations. It’s a time for self-reflection, where it’s just me, myself, and I.
This solitude allows my mind to feel rejuvenated and clear, untouched by the day’s incoming stressors. The world remains silent, and I can savor the moment without the rush of daily responsibilities.
The Challenge Ahead
Like many individuals, I am a creature of habit. My self-discipline fluctuates between extremes—either exceptionally low or remarkably high. This inconsistency makes it challenging for me to establish or break habits effectively.
Sleep, in particular, poses a significant hurdle. My body resists waking until absolutely necessary. I am the type of person who would choose a few more minutes of sleep over applying makeup or styling my hair. While there’s no shame in that, I often sacrifice precious morning moments simply to indulge in a bit more rest.
The Irony of Desire
It’s amusing to me that I yearn to be a morning person, yet achieving this goal feels overwhelmingly difficult. If I genuinely want something, shouldn’t I just go for it? Lying in bed the night before, I entertain thoughts of early rising, but as morning approaches, my body vehemently disagrees. I attribute this struggle to a lack of discipline.

Finding a Path Forward
Despite my struggles, I am aware of the solution to my dilemma:
Habits, whether beneficial or detrimental, can be tough to alter. Change requires effort, and perseverance is key. My ultimate aim is to embrace this new morning routine, even if it means enduring discomfort until I adjust. In the process, I plan to assert control over that sleepy alter ego.
