Excitement Fades for Apple's Latest iPad Pro Launch

Chapter 1 The Ongoing Apple Product Cycle
It seems that whenever I travel for work, Apple chooses that exact moment to unveil new products. This time, my travels took me to the Netherlands for a product announcement at JBL's headquarters. As usual, I was aware that something new from Cupertino was on the horizon, but I had no idea when they would reveal their latest offerings.
The announcement came at the end of a hectic day in Amsterdam, allowing me just enough time to return to my hotel room and film a spontaneous reaction video to what turned out to be one of the most uninspiring Apple product updates I can recall. This lack of excitement is what compels me to discuss it further today.
Section 1.1 A Dull Product Launch
Apple introduced three new products yesterday. First up is the 10th generation iPad, which features some attractive new colors, a design reminiscent of the iPad Air, and an increased price.
Despite its appealing aesthetics, the new model's higher price is concerning, especially since the previous generation’s $329 price point was one of its best features. Fortunately, the older model is still available on Apple’s website, but I question how long that will last.
Next, we have the updated Apple TV 4K. However, the changes are minimal, with the most notable being the inclusion of the A15 Bionic chip, which seems unnecessary. The device is slightly smaller and now supports HDR10+, with an option for 128GB storage. Additionally, the Siri Remote has received a USB-C charging port, which is puzzling—why now, Tim?
Subsection 1.1.1 The New iPad Pro
The third and final product announced was the new iPad Pro. Interestingly, this was presented second after the 10th generation iPad. It comes equipped with an M2 chip, but I have little to say about this upgrade. It feels akin to enhancing the horsepower of a luxury car while only using it for mundane errands.
Aside from the chip upgrade, everything else remains unchanged—the display, camera components, and design are identical to the M1 version. The only new features are a hover mode for the Apple Pencil, which shows where the tip will touch the screen, and some camera enhancements powered by the M2 chip.
My Favorite iPad Pro Accessories
The true magic of the iPad lies in the accessories that enhance its functionality.
Section 1.2 Why the iPad Pro Leaves Me Uninspired
I will be reviewing both new iPads, and while the 10th generation model looks appealing with its vibrant colors and updated design, I struggle to find excitement for the iPad Pro. My disappointment stems from a long-standing hope that Apple would finally unleash the full potential of this device.
Don’t misunderstand me—the iPad Pro is a remarkable tablet and arguably the best available. The problem is that Apple continues to underutilize its capabilities. They talk a lot about the new opportunities these iPads offer, yet it appears to cater primarily to children doing creative homework and casual users dabbling in video editing or music production.
This focus is commendable and makes these tools accessible to a broader audience, which is great for future generations. However, what about those who rely on these creative tools for their livelihoods?
As I reflected during a challenging trip to London, if the iPad Pro could support a full version of Final Cut Pro, it would be my go-to device while traveling. What frustrates me, and likely many others, is that it has the capacity for this—especially now with the M2 chip.
Chapter 2 The Uncertain Future of the iPad Pro
I recognize that my wishes may not be fulfilled anytime soon. Apple appears more interested in marketing the iPad Pro as a hobbyist tool rather than a professional-grade device, continually introducing features for iPadOS that seem unnecessary—like Stage Manager.
I must now contemplate whether to keep the 12.9-inch iPad Pro I’ve ordered. It’s still a pricey investment, and despite the creative possibilities it offers, I need to think strategically. Many others likely face the same dilemma, which is concerning for a device that has struggled with consistent sales growth.
Is this new model truly worth the investment when I already have a competent 2018 version sitting in my drawer? Time will tell.
