Finding Daily Energy: Lessons from FDR’s Resilience Journey
Written on
Chapter 1: The Resilience of Franklin D. Roosevelt
Throughout history, Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the United States, has been known for his remarkable resilience in the face of debilitating pain and extreme fatigue, especially during the latter years of his presidency amid World War II. At times, he struggled to stand or walk, relying on leg braces and a wheelchair for mobility. Despite these challenges, he managed to maintain his vigor up until his passing, demonstrating an extraordinary capacity to persevere.
This raises an important question: What fueled his relentless energy? Roosevelt’s remarkable ability to govern while grappling with significant health issues is often credited to his unwavering will, adaptability, and the support he received from those around him. His leadership amidst adversity serves as a powerful example of resilience and determination, offering valuable lessons for anyone facing their own struggles.
As someone who has experienced chronic pain, I have gleaned insights from his journey that extend beyond just coping with discomfort. I believe that cultivating resilience and determination can empower us to thrive, even when life becomes a challenge. By concentrating on a few essential areas, I have fortified my mindset, enabling me to find the energy not only to navigate each day but also to embrace it with enthusiasm.
Here are three vital lessons I have learned:
Section 1.1: Focus Your Mindset
The first lesson is to concentrate on your mindset. Aim to move forward rather than dwelling on your feelings. When you fixate on how you feel, it heightens the likelihood of succumbing to weakness. If you yield to this feeling frequently, it can become part of your identity.
Section 1.2: Lean on Your Support System
The second lesson is recognizing that you cannot face challenges alone. Seek support from loved ones. For instance, Roosevelt’s family noticed issues that doctors overlooked, highlighting the importance of having a support network. Allow those close to you—be it a partner, family member, or friend—to assist you in carrying your burdens. This not only fosters humility but also strengthens your relationships.
Subsection 1.2.1: Building Tenacity
The third lesson revolves around cultivating tenacity. It requires a steadfast determination to push through difficult days. On tough days, I practice a mental exercise that helps me overcome obstacles. By taking deep breaths and visualizing myself conquering the day—whatever that may entail—I can motivate myself to take action. With practice, this becomes a quick and effective strategy.

Chapter 2: Daily Energy Creation
Finding daily energy is generally not a struggle for me, although there are moments when my reserves run low. During these times, I rely on strategies to artificially generate energy. My go-to method is the "trick-the-brain" exercise.
To maintain a consistent level of energy, I strive to start each day with a routine. Establishing a morning regimen plays a crucial role in energizing both my body and mind, setting a positive tone for the day ahead. This approach has enabled me to navigate challenging mornings that might have otherwise felt overwhelming.
Remember, perfection is not the goal. Allow yourself grace on days that don’t go as planned, and rise again the following day with renewed determination. Over time, you will likely appreciate the peace of mind and energy that a solid morning routine can provide.
