A Surprising Link Between Traffic Peaks and Earnings Drops

Chapter 1: The Medium Experience
Navigating the Medium platform can be a rollercoaster ride, especially when it comes to views and earnings.
I vividly recall the day I surpassed 900 views in just 24 hours back in November. The excitement was palpable; it was nearly double my usual daily views. I was so charged with adrenaline that I couldn’t sleep, hitting refresh on my stats at least a hundred times, grinning like a child waiting for a treat. But when the earnings page finally updated, I was left speechless — I earned even less than the day before.
What on earth happened?
As strange as it sounds, I've grown accustomed to this odd trend and can’t help but chuckle when I think back to those earlier, naive days. It took me a while to understand the rhythm of Medium.
High Traffic Does Not Equal High Earnings
It's often the case that your busiest days, when your notifications are buzzing and everything feels like it’s in your favor, result in lower earnings than your average days.
Why does this happen?
Honestly, I’m not entirely sure. I have a simple theory, though it remains untested: a significant portion of earnings might not be credited until several days later — potentially as a precaution against spam. Medium may need time to verify that your views are legitimate and not purchased through dubious means, hence the delay in recognizing your earnings.
The only evidence I have to support this idea is that there have been days when my views plummeted, yet I still managed to earn a decent amount from my articles.
Once again, I can’t confirm this theory, and it’s possible that my observations are skewed. Have you experienced a similar trend with your own work?
