Transformative Books That Will Change Your Perspective

Chapter 1: The Influence of Literature
Books possess a unique power to influence and transform us, often lingering in our minds long after we've finished reading them. If Jesus had lived in a time when reading was common, he would have certainly immersed himself in it.
There are two primary reasons for this assertion:
- Reading enhances our humanity, aligning with Jesus's mission to improve people's lives.
- William Nicholson eloquently stated, "We read to know that we are not alone." This resonates with Jesus's message of companionship and support.
However, in Jesus's time, literacy was scarce, and even fewer had access to a wealth of reading materials. Yet, Jesus exemplified a deep thirst for knowledge. At the age of twelve, he engaged in discussions at the temple, as conversation was the main avenue for learning back then, akin to reading today. The art of debate was a prevalent skill in Greco-Roman culture.
Jesus was adept at "reading" people and drawing lessons from every encounter.
Section 1.1: Twelve Books That Shaped My Journey
Paul Sweeney once remarked, "You know you've read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend." Here are twelve books that have profoundly impacted me, along with my reflections on each.

This work was pivotal in shaping my understanding of justice, the human condition, and the power of prophetic rhetoric.
To Walk as He Walked by T.B. Maston
Jesus is woven throughout every chapter, and its simplicity might deceive you into thinking, "I could have penned this." Yet, you couldn't.
The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
My first read upon entering seminary; Bonhoeffer embodied its teachings and ultimately sacrificed his life for them.
My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers

The Sacred Journey by Frederick Buechner
After finishing this book, I found myself speechless for an hour, reminiscent of my first experience watching Schindler's List.
Jesus and the Disinherited by Howard Thurman
This book comes closest to capturing the essence of Jesus's spirit outside of the gospels.
Cathedral by Raymond Carver
As a lover of short stories, I regard Carver as a master, and his narratives always resonate deeply.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
I was young and impressionable when I first encountered this book, and it sparked my desire to explore more literature.
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
This book left a lasting impression on me during my youth; it was the most honest and haunting read I had experienced.
