Chapter 1: Introduction to Healthy Habits
There are numerous practices I've dabbled with over the years that have significantly enhanced my well-being. This year, my goal is to cultivate consistency and ensure these habits become a regular part of my routine.
As James Clear articulates in his book Atomic Habits, “Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement. They may seem insignificant on a daily basis, yet their cumulative impact over time can be substantial.”
Here’s a compilation of habits I aim to integrate:
1. Rosemary Water for Hair Growth:
Rosemary has gained attention for its potential to promote hair growth. While scientific studies on its effectiveness are limited, many people believe that its high antioxidant content and ability to increase blood circulation to the scalp make it a valuable choice for achieving fuller, longer hair. A significant number of users attribute their hair growth and thickness to rosemary water.
To prepare rosemary water, I combine a handful of rosemary with 5-7 cups of water in a pot, allow it to boil for around 30 minutes, and then let it steep as it cools. Once cooled, I store some in a spray bottle and freeze the remainder in an ice tray. It’s crucial to refrigerate the rosemary water after each use to prevent mold! As someone with curly hair, I find this especially useful for refreshing my curls, which I tend to do almost daily. I've only been using this for a few weeks, so I’ll share my results in a few months.
2. Lymphatic Drainage Massage:
The lymphatic system plays a vital role in maintaining fluid balance in our bodies. Lymph nodes serve as exit points for debris, and when lymph fluid gets trapped, it can lead to discomfort, discoloration, and swelling.
Gentle lymphatic massages can help move this fluid, reducing congestion and puffiness. Personally, I enjoy performing a lymphatic facial massage to enhance circulation, brighten my skin, and diminish puffiness. The results are often immediate! I follow various YouTube tutorials to guide my technique, and it’s essential to hydrate afterward by drinking water.
3. Castor Oil for Eyebrow and Eyelash Growth:
A beauty tip my mom shared with me is using castor oil on eyebrows and eyelashes. Although scientific studies on its effectiveness are scarce, the oil is rich in fatty acids and antioxidants that may support hair growth and thickness. Additionally, castor oil acts as a humectant, attracting moisture to the hair follicles.
I recommend using cold-pressed castor oil for its superior nutritional benefits. My routine involves applying it overnight using a Q-tip along my lash line and on my eyebrows. When I maintain consistency, I notice a significant difference.
4. Ginger Shots:
Ginger is renowned for its myriad health benefits. Recently, I learned to prepare ginger shots at home, which is a cost-effective option. Using a juicer, I blend ginger with pineapple or orange for a touch of sweetness. I strive to consume these shots daily or at least several times a week. However, it’s important to be cautious, as ginger can cause heartburn and affect blood sugar levels for some individuals.
5. Regular Exercise and Sunlight Exposure:
While this may seem obvious, I’ve only recently become consistent with my exercise routine. Initially, I struggled to find a sustainable regimen. Starting with a manageable 20-30 minute morning walk has helped me ease into a more active lifestyle.
Sunlight exposure has been transformative for my mood, focus, and sleep quality. I also began incorporating the “12-3-30” treadmill routine, created by influencer Lauren Giraldo, which involves 30 minutes of walking at a speed of 3 and an incline of 12. Additionally, I’ve embraced simple weight training and yoga classes to further strengthen my routine. Ultimately, finding enjoyable and non-intimidating exercises is key to establishing a sustainable fitness plan.
I hope these ideas inspire you! What habits are you planning to adopt in 2023?
Chapter 2: Health Equity Awareness
In the quest for better health, understanding health equity is crucial.
This video, titled Health Equity, explores the importance of equitable health practices and how they can positively affect our well-being. It highlights the disparities in health access and outcomes while emphasizing community engagement and awareness as pivotal steps towards achieving better health for all.
