Understanding the Concept of Ferberization

Imagine a scene in a busy mall. A mother is with her toddler and preschooler when the preschooler spots a delicious Tollhouse Cookie sign. He exclaims, “I want a cookie.” The mother responds with a weary, “No.” The preschooler persists, “But mommy, I want the cookie.” To which the mother explains, “It’s almost dinnertime.”

Now, the toddler, strapped in his stroller, echoes his brother's desire. “Cookie.” The mother's frustration grows as both children begin to whine. After a moment of contemplation, she finally concedes, “Fine. Just one cookie each.” Instantly, the boys' frowns vanish, replaced by gleeful smiles.

This scenario is not fictional; it was a moment I witnessed with my friend and her children. In that moment, I found myself silently critiquing her parenting choices, questioning how she could give in so easily. It’s easy to pass judgment when you’re not the one dealing with the stress of parenting.

The Ferber Method, developed by Richard Ferber, is designed to help young children learn self-soothing, particularly in the context of sleep training. This method involves allowing children to cry for set intervals before offering comfort.

This experience led me to ponder whether we could apply the concept of "Ferberizing" to everyday interactions with our children. Over the years, I have used this method with my own kids, encouraging them to confront their fears and discomforts. For instance:

  • I encouraged my son to crack eggs for pancakes, even though he feared breaking them.
  • I took my child to an animal shelter to help him overcome his reluctance to be around dogs.
  • I prompted him to apologize to a peer he had unintentionally hurt.

Then, time passed, and my children became teenagers. It turns out that teens can also benefit from a version of Ferberization.

Adapting Ferberization for Teens

The principle of self-soothing is especially relevant for teenagers, who face a myriad of challenges and stressors. However, the approach to Ferberization changes as children grow. While young children may have visible tantrums, teens might seek solace in more harmful ways, such as substance use or negative peer influences.

So, what can we do as parents? We can show up, listen without judgment, and reassure them of our unconditional support. Yet, there is a crucial aspect we must accept: we need to allow our teens to navigate their emotions, even if it means witnessing their outbursts.

Just as those young boys at the cookie shop needed to express their disappointment, our teenagers must also confront their struggles. We must let them work through their challenges while being available for support when they seek it.

The natural instinct is to intervene and resolve their issues, similar to how the mother quickly provided cookies to her kids. However, this "fix" often leads to short-term relief with long-term consequences. They might learn that by making enough noise, they can get their way, or that parents are there merely to please them.

Teenagers are often more subtle in their demands—be it for money, a car, or extended curfews. As parents, we need to establish our boundaries while ensuring our kids know we’re there for them. This balance fosters their independence and teaches them self-regulation.
