Running and Joy: My 8-Month Journey of Daily Streaking

The Connection Between Running and Happiness
For many enthusiasts, the allure of running often leads to a desire for more. Once you've experienced the thrill of a 5K, the temptation to tackle a 10K arises, and soon, thoughts of half marathons and even ultramarathons come to mind. It’s a common journey for runners, and if you're reading this, you’re likely familiar with it.
After years of running—and having worn through multiple pairs of shoes—you may find yourself drawn to a specific kind of runner: the streaker. For these individuals, the focus shifts from distance to consistency. At its simplest, a running streak begins with committing to run at least one kilometer every day. However, seasoned streakers often push beyond these initial benchmarks, with no real cap on their goals.
What Defines a Running Streak?
In essence, a running streak means you must lace up and run every day, regardless of circumstances. Whether you're feeling under the weather, exhausted, or preparing for a race, the guideline remains unchanged: you must run. Factors such as injuries, adverse weather, or travel are mere details. If you want to maintain the streak, you run that day. Those are the rules—no exceptions.
My First Foray into Streaking
After dedicating 15 years to running, I embarked on my inaugural serious streak. A phrase, “5 for 555,” echoing in my mind, inspired me to run a minimum of 5K daily for 555 consecutive days. At that time, I was juggling a demanding 80-hour work week while also committing to completing at least one marathon annually, all in pursuit of my goal to run the Zurich marathon for 20 consecutive years.
I share this context for you to gauge the wisdom of my decision to start a daily running streak. Many of you might understand my motivations and even agree with them.
The End of My Streak: A Learning Experience
Unexpectedly, I discovered that running daily cultivates a habit, which in turn reinforces itself, making it easier to persist. However, my journey was not without its challenges. Countless cold and dreary mornings in Switzerland left me longing for extra sleep. Traveling for business one week out of every four meant I had to wake up even earlier to fit in my runs before flights, and sometimes I needed to run late at night upon arrival.
Despite continuing to race in marathons and half marathons, I never took time off to rest my legs before events or allowed myself a single day of recovery after a tough race. I persevered for eight months before I finally missed a day—not due to an injury but simply because I chose to stop.
Though my streak concluded rather unceremoniously, the lessons I gained were invaluable.
Insights Gained from My Streak
Every challenge we willingly undertake has the potential to strengthen us, especially when approached with a positive attitude. Through this journey, I learned more about myself. I discovered I could tackle difficult tasks and that many obstacles exist more in our minds than in reality.
Pushing my body taught me about its capabilities, enhancing my VO2 max like no other training had before. I realized that, at times, we can be our own harshest critics; to maintain a streak, one must adopt a strict mindset. This raises an intriguing question: why would anyone choose to engage in such a demanding commitment?
I believe the answers to this question are as varied as the runners themselves. What I find inspiring is that many runners articulate compelling reasons for their dedication.
What about you? Have you ever taken on a running streak?
Be well.
- Ultimately, I averaged 12.4K per day, totaling 3,012K over my journey. I often write about thriving in professional settings and living a fulfilling life. While fitness plays a significant role, it's just one part of the bigger picture.
